What Lies Below
Only 5% of the world’s oceans have been explored. Humans have explored more of space than they have their own planetary bodies of water. There are three main classified zones: Euphotic, Dysphotic, and the Aphotic Zone. The naming of these zones are based on how much light penetrates that layer of the ocean. Within the Aphotic Zone there are three zones in total: Midnight Zone, the Abyss, and the Hadal Zone. Each of these ocean zones have their own unique characteristics and influence on the world. This editorial is focused on exploring what is known of the Earth’s ocean zones, their environmental impacts, and why continued research is important. The goal of this piece is to educate, inspire, and encourage others to consider the beauty of our home planet’s waters and what lies beneath the sea.
